In end, this free good-will and simple meaning of the Canarrines wrought such tenderness in my father's heart, that he could not abstain from shedding tears, and wept most profusely; then, by choice words very congruously adapted, strove in what he could to diminish the estimation of the good offices which he had done them, saying, that any courtesy he had conferred upon them was not worth a rush, and what favour soever he had showed them, he was bound to do it. But so much the more did Alpharbal augment the repute thereof. What was the issue? Whereas for his ransom in the greatest extremity of rigour, and most tyrannical dealing, could not have been exacted above twenty times a hundred thousand crowns, and his eldest sons detained as hostages, till that sum had been paid, they made themselves perpetual tributaries, and obliged to give us every year two millions of gold at four and twenty carats fine. The first year we received the whole sum of two millions; the second year of their own accord they paid freely to us three and twenty hundred thousand crowns; the third year, six and twenty hundred thousand; the fourth year, three millions, and do so increase it always out of tljeir own good-will, that we shall be constrained to forbid them to bring us any more. G. Please note description of condition below (request if cut off online). Two volumes in olive green cloth with small pastedown title cards to upper spines, no jacket, small 8vos. Not ex-lib. V.1 is 1890, 5th edition thus; V.2 is 1888 with no editions indicated. V.1 translated by Sir Thomas Urquhart, no translator noted v.2, introductions by Henry Morley in both volumes. V.1 contains Bks I & II of Pantagruel. Good. Cloth of both volumes soiled with moderate rubbing (both heavier on rear v.2) with colors still strong (v.2 of somewhat lighter tone). Abrasion and surface loss at tips of corners and spine ends only. Strong toning to title cards, with stain on v.2, titles still legible. Both bindings tight and square. Soil to rough cut age edges. Pages well toned but clean and unmarked save for prev owner's signatures on series title pages and below upper edge title page v.2. Occasional scuffing and toning to illustrated ads on endpapers and pre-title pages.
