THE LAST YEAR OF HIS MINISTRY. I. It was somewhere along the plain of Gennesaret that Jesus and his disciples landed--a beautifully fertile and very populous district stretching along the lake westward and southward from Capernaum. No sooner had he stepped off the boat than the people knew him and ran about all through the neighborhood with word that he was there, and brought all the sick people to him and he healed them. All along the journey back to Capernaum the road was fairly lined with sick people on their pallets; the market-places of the villages were filled with them; people begged merely for leave to touch his garments as he passed by, and as many as touched were made whole. At no time in all the life of Jesus do we read of such an exuberance of miracle-working power as seemed to go forth from him on this bright spring morning as he walked beside the lake. It is impossible to read of this morning of miracles without a feeling of intense sadness. Never after this did the tide of enthusiasm run so high; never after this was his victory over suffering so outwardly manifest. From that time, perhaps because the people were disappointed that he would not let them make him king, perhaps because the scribes and Pharisees were more determined in their opposition and poisoned many minds against him, perhaps merely because Jesus saw that the time had come to devote himself more completely to the education of those whose faith was strong and true and not a ...
