Kunstler has captured the '60's rock scene and managed to tell an engrossing story in the process--or vice versa. In any event, as "Gatsby" is to the 1920's, Byron Jaynes is to the 1960's. The feel of the decade with all its promise and disappointments, absent anything trite or stereotypical, lives again in these pages. Kunstler, the ex-Rolling Stone writer, lived it and knows how to make it come alive. The storyline follows a troubled writer who thinks he has stumbled upon a long-dead rock-star (a la Jim Morrison), in a small country store. When confronted, the aging rocker reluctantly agrees to tell the story of his life and (faked) death. The resultant story is comical, sad, touching, and gripping. Kunstler is a craftsman of rare talent and deep insight, and this is one great read--and one to read over and over again (like watching a favorite film). I have owned a dozen copies--the people I lend it to can't seem to part with it. You will fall in love with it too.
