Of Schiller and Wieland I have written at considerable length, because both as men and as clients they played the most important part in his life. Wieland will be a comparatively new personage to English readers; but in the case of Schiller I have necessarily had to introduce some incidents, some matters relating to his works and his personality, with which readers of his many biographies are already acquainted; but parts of the story of Schiller's life bear so closely on my grandfather's fortunes, while they are in themselves extremely interesting, that I' make no apology for recounting them once more.
