Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Robert G. Ingersoll: Edited With a Biographical Introduction by Eva Ingersoll Wakefield The reader also may well be surprised by the omission of letters to Colonel Ingersoll's wife. The reason for this is that his younger daughter, Maud Ingersoll, felt very strongly that these letters were too intimate for publication, while her sister, Eva Ingersoll Brown, believed that their father and all his thoughts and works belonged not only to the family but to the world. As for Mrs. Ingersoll's attitude, her death occurred before the question was raised. The reader will readily appreciate that this situation left the Editor in a very delicate and difficult quandary, which she finally resolved by the aforesaid omission. It will be obvious from the text that the Editor has in no wise attempted to write a genuine and thorough-going biography of Robert Ingersoll, but merely a biographical out line or sketch. She has simply presented some of the important materials upon which to base biographies and appraisals by future students of Ingersoll.
