Excerpt from The Library of George Gordon King, Vol. 2 of 2: The Prints The plan of this catalogue was formed for the pur pose of study, and not to extol the worth or to hide the deficiencies of the collection. Difficulties, however, were met in making the division by schools and by centuries. Some engravers, it happens, are claimed by two or more schools; and wrong or insufficient information makes doubtful any decision as to others. The division into centuries is, of course, arbitrary but it was thought bet ter to determine the centuries by the death-dates rather than by the birth-dates. The prints forming the collection are placed loosely in portfolios, which are lettered from A to I or lightly mounted in volumes, which are numbered from r to 68. Of the contents of these portfolios and volumes, a gen eral statement is given in Part I., the Book Catalogue, under the heading Prints. The portfolios are divided into schools and centuries, the volumes are paged, and the prints are continuously numbered from 1 to 5538.
