Collingwood, one time secretary to the great John Ruskin of Coniston, UK, was a most gifted observer of all good things. The Lake Counties is an enduring and still very popular record of the beauties and wonders of our splendid mountainous region. There are pen-and-ink sketches on many pages and water-colour pictures in the larger editions.
Collingwood writes with clarity; his prose is enjoyable by all readers. Sir Hugh Walpole claimed that it "contains the grandest prose-writing about the Lake District in existence".
The book is truly comprehensive in its coverage, even including superb supplements (by other worthy authors) relevant to the natural history and sport in these counties, e.g. birds, flora, butterflies & moths, buildings, boating, mountaineering, etc.
Note that it was first published in 1902 but reprinted several times. A newer version, edited and revised by Wm Rollinson, with excellent photographs and a gazetteer, has since been published (1988). This is also excellent and lovers of Lakeland will probably enjoy both versions, in different ways.
