This classic in Yukon gold rush literature was originally published in 1900 and has long been out of print. Tappan Adney, a New York journalist, was commissioned by the publisher Harper and Brothers to "proceed to Dawson to furnish news and pictures of the new gold fields". Adney was a systematic and careful observer as well as a wonderful writer. In his book he discusses everything from the kinds of gear needed for the trek; the trails and rivers that led to the gold fields; mining methods; how to handle freight; what made a good dog team; the role and reputation of the North West Mounted Police; how to choose a cabin site; whiskey and its effects; and what to do about a runaway horse. As well, there are intriguing portraits of many of the miners and Native people involved in the story of the gold rush. Adney repeats many of the most engaging stories of the Klondike experience, always placing them in their context and inviting the reader to experience with him the various points along the line - Victoria, Skagway, Whitehorse and Yukon. "The Klondike Stampede" is one of the few first-hand descriptions of the Klondike gold rush, which began in 1896 and attracted miners and countless other fortune seekers from all over the world. Their experiences make this the most colourful period in the history of the north. The book is illustrated with photographs and drawings done by Adney himself and includes maps of the places and areas mentioned.

Well written historical account and photos of a event in which the author is there just to record history not to make it. A great glimpse into the past
