Othing shows the advance of mankind so much as the abolition of barbarous punishments. It was common, at one time, to call upon the accused to prove their innocence by fire or water: if they were able to withstand the heat of the one or the force of the other they were deemed guiltless of the crime imputed to them. A soldier at Constantinople, being accused of a certain crime, it was adjudged that he should bear a red-hot ball to the altar rails of the church three times, without artifice or injury. The soldier eluded the punishment with pleasantry: turning to the priest who attended--" I am a soldier," said he, "and will boldly face my antagonist; but, being a layman and a sinner, cannot pretend to the gift of miracles; your piety, holy father, may deserve the interposition of heaven; and from your hands I will receive the fiery ball, and test my innocence." The priest started, the judges smiled, and the soldier was pardoned. But you must not suppose that criminals generally escaped so easily; the most fearful punishments, of which you will read the accounts in other books when you grow...
