Burton (1821-90) was a British explorer, geographer, translator, writer, soldier, orientalist, cartographer, ethnologist, spy, linguist, poet, fencer and diplomat. He was famed for his travels and explorations in Asia, Africa and the Americas, as well as his extraordinary knowledge of languages and cultures. This work was published posthumously in 1898 and was controversial for its criticism of Jews and for its assertion of the existence of Jewish human sacrifices. The manuscript of the book included an appendix discussing the topic in more detail but by the decision of his widow, Isabel, Lady Burton (1831-96), it was not included when the book was published in a revised version edited by William Henry Wilkins (1860-1905). After her death, Wilkins published a sympathetic memoir of Lady Burton based on her letters and autobiography.

Seller's Description:
Very Good (Minus). No Jacket. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall. These three essays by the famed explorer and linguist Sir Richard Burton (1821-1890) date to the 1870s, when he was Consul in Damascus. Published posthumously-they survived the firey death that so many of his works suffered at the hand of Isabel. They are controversial; a dispute with the Jewish community led Burton to pen antisemitic content. Much of this has been expurgated, but unfortunately gave credence to the Damascus Blood Libel of 1840 that still rages across the Muslim world. Penzer, 158. This is a Good to Very Good (Minus) copy of the First American Edition. An important book, and not common. Blue-green cloth binding with a paper label on the spine. Edited, with a Preface and "Brief Notes" by W.H. Wilkins. Generally clean text; xix, 351 pages, deckle; indexed. Frontis portrait of Burton. This is an ex-library copy, with treatments: stamps on FFEP and Title Page; rear pocket removal; number on the spine. Externally there is rubbing to the margins and the hinges have cracked. Although serviceable as it is, Quercus sees this as an excellent candidate for a quality rebind.
