Even among Protestant missionaries the same difficulties have arisen in our own time in regard to the proper title of the Deity, and the form which it ought to assume in a language absolutely desti tute of any definite or distinctive name to express the Supreme Being. Nor is the controversy on the methods Of teaching Christianity, and the gradual manner in which its higher doctrines should be introduced to the heathen and the prudence with which its foundations should be laid, less likely to assume the same importance and to involve the same difficulties which were disclosed in the days of the great Father Ricci.
