This book was written in the 1940s and discusses jazz records that were available at that time, some as new as just a year or two. We're talking about 78 rpm records here. Smith is an intelligent and perceptive writer, and he was one of the early writers to treat jazz as an art form worthy of both study and permanence. It's interesting to learn what music he considered important almost 70 years ago, but obviously the passage of time has changed our perspective on much of the music he discusses. Students of jazz history will enjoy this book, which I would give
3 1/2 stars if possible.
