Among other things, this installment in Fantasy's American Song Classics series makes sure that the oddly underrated Harry Warren belongs right in the pantheon with Rodgers, Kern and the rest. The list of big-time standards that Warren created is long and surprisingly familiar, and Fantasy had no problem finding a diverse lineup of 16 artists in its holdings who played Warren tunes. In two unusual choices, Sonny Rollins can be heard with a latter-day electric band of his on "I'll String Along With You," and Zoot Sims envisions a "Shadow Waltz" bossa nova (the first five notes are identical to those in "Desafinado") with an easy swing that even Stan Getz would have envied. The best sequencing is the one leading from Bill Evans' "I Wish I Knew" into Red Garland's "You'll Never Know," the latter of which sports an Evans-like intro. The other artists are Art Pepper, Kenny Dorham, Kenny Drew, Leroy Vinnegar, Art Tatum, Shelly Manne, Barney Kessel, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Chet Baker, Count Basie, Lester Young and Johnny Hodges. ~ Richard S.
