Ren Bazin was admitted to the Acadmie Franaise on April 28, 1904. The protagonist of "The Ink Stain" is a law student. Studying at the library, he knocks over an inkwell, leaving an enormous blot on the text being read by another patron. Visiting the patron later at his home, he attempts to apologize, In doing so, he meets the patron's daughter, and falls hopelessly in love. His uncle rejects the notion of his bringing home a Parisian wife. The girl's hand is promised to another: a noble of good family but questionable character and habits. Can love prevail over family wishes?
