Yet this purpose is still not the objective one required by our canon. It is conscious, and refers primarily to the control (physical or conceptual) of certain objects present in consciousness. Only so far as there is in such cases a sustained effort to maintain a type of process do we have the purposive unity demanded for individuality. Certainly the negative outcome is not less evident when we examine the emotional and conative side of human nature. Emotion in its very nature is more or less tumultuous, and the quasi-artificial purposiveness in it, as a servant of the organism, is but of a rude order. Organically viewed, it is a port of fire alarm of the system, calling upon all the parts to rise to meet a situation for which there is no effective specialized adjustment. Still less as a system of reactions is the emotional and conative nature unitary. Rather is it wont to reveal itself as a bundle of inconsistencies, a congeries of attractions and repulsions, of impulses rational and irrational, of excellences and blemishes, of "fire and clay." 6 Consciousness as a theater, not a balanced and stable system, --the theater of contending impulses, the scene of tragic defeats followed by self-rending remorse, and of hard-won victories, which full often have to be won over and over, is the favorite theme of literature, and the basis of the most passionate. religious appeals.
