Thomas King offers a deeply knowing, darkly funny, unabashedly opinionated, and utterly unconventional account of Indian-White relations in North America since initial contact. Both timeless and timely, The Inconvenient Indian ultimately rejects the pessimism and cynicism with which Natives and Whites regard one another to chart a new and just way forward for Indians and non-Indians alike.

Thomas King presents not the images we have been given in school of the "making" of the US and Canada but the domination and destruction of one society to make way for another. More critically he explains how this continues in the present as the European-based cultures we have grab again and again for the land that the Native Peoples still have. After reading it, if you "own" a piece of land in Canada or the United States, you may feel some shame for how it was obtained--and make a commitment to not support the grab for more Native Peoples' land that's made tomorrow. Its a well written book that explains much about the relationship between the newer residents of this continent and the native residents that could only have been written with such authority by Thomas King. He explains clearly the different philosophies about land and its use. Its a book that should be required reading in history courses in both Canada and the United States.
