On March 24, 1989, the oil tanker Exxon Valdez went aground on Bligh Reef in Prince William Sound, Alaska, releasing more than ten million gallons of oil. At the time of the spill, longtime Alaska resident Art Davidson had just finished the text for Alakshak: The Great Country, a beautiful pictorial book celebrating pristine beauty of the Alaskan wilderness. Like other Alaska residents Davidson was shocked and angered by this senseless desecration of his homeland and, after receiving the go-ahead from Sierra Club Books that very day, he went to work immediately on a book.
