Adams Fall is marked by a buoy, and Southwest Ledge by a lighthouse. Midway between Quixes Ledge and Adams Fall is a rock, with six feet of water on it. The breakwater extends from Southwest Ledge to beyond Quixes Ledge. To the E. and SE. of Quixes Ledge are numerous rocks and reefs, extending out three-quarters of a mile from the shore. On the W. side of the entrance to New Haven Harbor a shoal makes out two and one-quarter miles from the shore, opposite West Hayen. Two fathoms can be carried over this shoal at a distance of one and onehalf miles from the shore, but one-half mile farther in the water shoals to six feet. A breakwater is being built on the west side of the entrance and the bell-buoy is kept near the end of the breakwater. From The Westward.--When about twelve miles W. of New Haven Harbor, and about one mile off Stratford Point buoy, in six fathoms, bring the light-house on Southwest Ledge to bear NE. by E. E., and run on that course until the round top of Mount Carmel opens just past the W. edge of East Rock, and then as above. The breakwater extends from Southwest Ledge to Quixes Ledge. To the E. and SE. of Quixes Ledge are numerous rocks and reefs, extending three-quarters of a mile off shore.
