Not illustrated. 1856 Excerpt: ...&c. &c., and seriously affected the sale of the poets' yearly volumes; (7) that he co-operated with Dr. Gifford in the Standard for a year, and then established the United Service Gazette, in which he denounced the waste of money in the dockyards, and the system of promotion by purchase; (8) that in 1850 he published an edition of his select poetical writings, under the title of " Lyrics of the Heart," which met with the approval of Sir Robert Peel; (9) that in 1853, he received a pension of 100Z. per annum; and (10) that nearly twenty years ago he insured his life for ten thousand pounds, but is now in robust health, and the speculation has turned out very unprofitable. What mortal man will be benefited by such information we cannot pretend to say. Nor can we understand why "Gough, John B. Lecturer," is to have six pages to his own considerable "cheek." Nor do we see the necessity of referring, in the sketch of Mr. Albert Smith, to a snobbish and ridiculous biography of that great man in a weekly contemporary. As favourable specimens of the best style of this volume we select (with pardonable pride in the second instance) the two following biographies: --Thackeray, William Makepeace, Novelist. Mr. Thackeray is descended from a Saxon family of Yorkshire. His grandfather was the Rev. Richard Thackeray, of Hadley, Middlesex. His father held a situation in the Civil Service of the East India Company, and his distinguished son was born at Calcutta in 1811. On coming of age he inherited a good fortune.
