If I had read the plot synopsis of "The Ice Chorus" before picking it up, I probably would not have taken it home from the library. This would have been a shame, because the synopsis leads one to think the book is a by-the-numbers romance, which is it not. As it was, however, I was wandering the "S" shelves in the library stacks and was struck by the cover design. I read the first page and liked the writing style, so I added it to my "check out" pile.
This is one of those nice accidents that I wish would happen more often. Sarah Stonich's writing is sensuous and rich with detail. She clearly loves to drown the reader in sensory images. While this is not a style I demand of every author I read, every once in a while it's nice to delve into work like this that gives that specific part of the imagination a workout.
I will admit that Stonich almost lost me mid-novel, however. As I mentioned before, this work is sort of masquerading as a predictable romance, and there is some exposition that I originally took to be the meat of the story. Take a neglected wife, a tropical setting, and a handsome painter. Add to that the difficulty of reading about the breakdown of a marriage through adultery, and I began to have doubts about the quality of the book. I am glad I kept reading, however, because Stonich's story is much more honest and original than that. Really it deals with the protagonist's need to come to terms with hardships from her past and allow these old, hardened feelings to come to the surface, hopefully to be broken up by the process of exposure. I'll keep an eye out for Stonich's work in the future.
