Emily McCarthy is living in fear of a dark and dangerous past. A gifted mathematician, she is little more than a hollow, broken shell, trying desperately to make ends meet long enough to finish her degree. Through an unlikely friendship with the aging, cantankerous owner of an old boxing gym, Em is thrown into the path of the most dangerous man that she has ever met. Cormac "the Hurricane" O'Connell is cut, tattooed and dangerous. He is a lethal weapon with no safety and everyone is waiting for the mis-fire. He's never been knocked out before, but when he meet Em he falls, HARD. Unlike any other girl he's ever met, she doesn't want anything from him. Just being around her makes him want to be a better person. They are polar opposites who were never meant to find each other, but some things are just worth the fight. Lyrical Life Quote - Fate can be fickle but also a guiding light.
The Hurricane is a book that will stay with you and refuse to depart. The event's along with the twists and turns of the novel test both the skill of R.J Prescott, which is easily surpassed and also the central characters. From the damaged and soul-renching events of the past to the trials and dangers of the present, there is barely a moment to take a breath. The character of Emily shows a courage of hope and belief that blend easily with her timid yet strong personality. Her experiences remain in the darkest depths of her mind and despite her effort to move forward, a very real fear resides. Her relationship with gym owner Danny is delicate but also reliable and gives her a solid foundation from which to work. Throughout the book Emily encounters friends which create a quiet beauty that brings fourth both struggles and happiness. The relationship between Emily and Cormac does show a connection of souls and the equal need the two share for one another is clear. His unwavering care and passion for her keep the pages turning without thought. Although Cormac is trapped within a repetitive cycle of which only he can change, he lacks the determination and motivation to do so. His choices are shallow and his life style hollow until Emily. Underneath his careless fascade is a deep loyalty of friendship that also hides his attachment and respect of gym owner danny, who allows some form of stability to enter Cormac's life as well as his friend's.
A feeling of pure emotion seems to pour from both Emily and Cormac, but in very different ways which gives the dialogue a truth and perhaps a more powerful delivery. To smile with a warmth in your heart is to read this book.
