She shot him just above the belt and left him for dead. Then they torched the house, with Parker in it, and took the money he had helped them steal. It all went down just the way they'd planned, except for one thing: Parker didn't die. In The Hunter , the first volume in the Parker series, our ruthless antihero roars into New York City, seeking revenge on the woman who betrayed him and on the man who took his money, stealing and scamming his way to redemption. The volume that kickstarted Parker's forty-plus-year career of larceny--and inspired the 1967 motion picture Point Blank , starring Lee Marvin-- The Hunter is back, ready to thrill a new generation of noir fans.

Richard Stark was one of the many pen names used by prolific crime fiction writer Donald Westlake. Westlake was well known for the great ingenuity of his plots and the audacity of his gimmicks; his writing and dialogue are lively. His main characters are fully rounded, believable, and clever. This is especially true of Parker, the hard-boiled criminal, who debuted in a Westlake short story in 1959. Parker, a relentless and remorseless professional thief, was the principal character in sixteen novels written under the Richard Stark pseudonym between 1962 and 1974. "Stark" was then inactive until 1997, when Westlake recommenced writing about Parker's "scores." Eight additional Parker novels were completed before Westlake's death in 2008. "The Hunter" is the first Parker novel; it is taught, suspenseful, and gritty, and sets the tone for the remainder of the series.
