This is the first in a series of novels about soldiering in Queen Victoria's Army; building and maintaining order in the British Empire of the 19th Century. I will review it here as a series, since I have read the first four books. They are exceptionally well done. Mr. Wilcox conveys a sense of what the Victorian Age was like through the interaction of his characters, not just a re-hash of major engagements, not always presenting things solely from the Empire's point of view. That gives the plot line a huge degree of plausibility, and lends much humanity to his characters. The writing and editing improves with each book.
