For my money, "The Age of Napoleon" by J. Christopher Herold is the definitive work on Napoleon Bonaparte. I know of no writer who could surpass Herold's command of the subject nor do I know of a historiographer who writes so well. Herold's style is impeccably learned but pithy, epigrammatic to a degree that would cause Edward Gibbon to tip his hat in respect. Scribblers like me shrivel and turn green with envy even as we bask in the joy of reading an author like Herold.
As for the book itself: this Horizon Magazine folio edition was obviously a labor of love for everyone involved in the project. Fully open, it lays flat on the table in front of me. I hear no cracks or hisses as I open it. The pages are creamy white. There is no sign of yellowing after 46 years on the shelf. Typography and page layouts are elegant; they show clean lines and razor-sharp legibility throughout. The illustrations are a glory.
The Horizon Magazine edition of "The Age of Napoleon" is history as history should always be written in a book that shows us how good books should always be built. I paid $15 for this book that's nearly 50 years old and I don't believe I ever made a better deal. Those who don't want a deluxe edition can get "The Age of Napoleon" in paperback and still enjoy Herold's brilliant writing and the flawless production that American Heritage editors and staff made of everything they did.
Solomon sez: You can't go wrong with "The Age of Napoleon." It's a great read no matter how you choose to look at it. Five Stars for a super, bang-up job.
