It was originally intended to be no more than a compilation from well-known authorities - a compilation for which the writer of this preface proposed only to discharge the functions of editor. The difficulties, however, of adapting for modern readers the language and ideas of the older Jubilee manuals were soon found to be insuperable. Accordingly, the book which has resulted has grown in scope, and is practically an original work. At the same time, it has not been written entirely by one hand, and the responsibility indicated by the attribution upon the title page must be understood in some portions to represent revision rather than direct authorship.
