I am an aetheist and have purchased 10 copies of this magnificent work as gifts for my closest and most socially conscious friends. Moser, like his mentor Leonard Baskin, is one of the greatest graphic artists of the 20th Century. The 300 plus wood engravings he has imagined and created for this monumental work each represent the most moving insight into the human spirit and the most accessible imagery in their gorgeous chiaroscuro depictions and ultimate drama. Clearly, the Bible is one of the greatest works of human literature, but with Moser's illustrations, it is elevated to a sublime level of aesthetic and compelling value that really represent an unparalleled visual and dramatic treasure. The book is heavy and the paper/pages wonderful to the touch and turn. Each turn brings you to the next engraving, an explosive surprise, some rich in design of aspects of the earth's fauna and flora, and others populated by portraits of biblical characters altogether haunting and sensuous to ponder. Moser uses people in his life as models, Baskin's visage is that of Moses. The expressions, the poses, the contexts, the mystery will draw you back again and again, almost as a voyeur, into his haunting world class historiography. Soon, this book will no longer be readily available and it's current affordability makes it one of the best buys in the market.
