Covers rubbed and edge-worn; several small white spots on front cover of vol. 3; backstrips rubbed; backstrip of vol. 3 separating; previous owner's intials on preliminary blanks; handwritten presentation on chapter page of two volumes. Pages adjacent to plates with no tissue guard (about half) are browned; nearly all plates are free of foxing or have only unobtrusive foxing. Dampstain at top margin on all plates of vol. 3, and top and outside margins on all plates of vol. 2, not affecting engravings. A complete set, with all of the 84 in-text plates called for, the tinted folding map of North America (in very good condition), and 2 of the 3 frontispiece plates (lacks the plate of The Pilgrims Embarkening from vol. 1). In addition, this copy includes three plates not called for: Trenton Falls; The Narrows, Lake George; John Hancock. The plate of James Polk, called for in volume 3, is in volume 1. Very Good- Steel Plate engravings; 4to 11"-13" tall; 3 volumes, complete. Soundly bound in matching publisher's deluxe trade binding of full red pebbled calfleather with highly decorative borders and vignettes tooled in gilt to boards and decorative title desing sna flourishes gilt tooled to spines. [7], 698; 720; 726 pp. Some light to moderate scuffing and rubbing to leather at board edges; Vol I has a small piece of leather chipped from the crown and Vol III has shallow loss from leather at the tail of the spine. Tissue guarded steel engraved plates throughout, over 80 in total and including extra engraved title pages for each volume. Original coated brown endsheets complete and sound in the joints. All edges gilt. Binder's flaw in Vol III has left a signature including two engraved plates not sewn in on their binding stub; laid in but a little furred where the leaves started from the front edge. Most engraved plates bright and clean, some with mild foxing and a few more heavily foxed. Hand colored, folding map at front of Vol I is clean and generally neat with mild wear to folds. Uncommon in this deluxe trade binding, and thoug a bit rubbed and worn at edges-a generally bright and neat example. VG-thus...Oversize book will require additional charges for most shipping methods.

Vol 1 and 3 have water damage to lower part of pages. Red leather boards with gilt lettering and design. All edge gilt. All volumes with 5 raised bands on spine. All volumes with b/w frontace piece w/ protecive guard. B/w illustrated half title page in all volumes. Majority of illustrated plates have protective guard. Pagination of each volume respectively: 698, 720, and 726 pages, with 8 pages of publisher's advertisements following volume 3 at the end of division 7. / Includes folded facsimile of the signatures at the end of the Declaration of Independence in division 2. The most common engravers of plates are J.C. Armytage, W.J. Edwards, T. Knight, R. Wallis, Chas. Hall, T.W. Hunt, and J. Stephenson. Some of the portraits are based on daguerrotypes by Mathew Brady.
