In April, 1840, the "Latter-Day Saints," or Mormons, came in large numbers to Illinois, and purchased a tract of land on the east bank of the Mississippi, at a point formerly known by the name of Commerce. Here they commenced building a city which they called Nauvoo, a Hebrew word, signifying, according to Mormon interpretation, "peaceable," or "pleasant." Nature has not formed along the "Great River," a more picturesque or eligible site for a large city. The succession of terraces ascending from the river until the high land is reached, furnish a gradual slope of remarkable beauty; noble groves of tall oaks, interspersed by winding vistas, clothe the ground to the summit ridge, from whence an immense undulating prairie is visible. No shrubbery or undergrowth obstructs the view of the open forest.
