Jf-. 1630), anticipates, in a lively way, the position to which the Elector would probably be reduced: "If Cccsar will not endure a Duke of Mantua beyond the Alps who will not obey him, how will he suffer an Elector of Saxe or Brandenburg, his marshal, his chamberlayne, &c, whose soul is a breath of false liberty, to affront him? For to live and not to serve is an offence, which if they see not, they must feel, and be reduced to do those duties they have long played in types and figures."--Ibid. The king, remembering his past transactions with the duke, received his envoy with some reserve, yet professed himself not unwilling to help him, providing Wittemberg were surrendered as a retreat to the Swedish army in the event of a reverse, that the elector advanced for it three months' pay, that his eldest son took service with the king, and that the elector himself entered with him into an alliance offensive and defensive. Danger made the Duke of Saxony prodigal. He had before told the Imperial ambassadors, with rueful pleasantry, that the only token of friendship f he could expect from the emperor was, that which Polyphemus granted Ulysses--to be devoured the last J, or to be made the dessert (as it were) of the Imperial banquet. ...
