This triple-LP package was one of the first career retrospectives (if not the first) of the Phlorescent Leech & Eddie, otherwise known as former Turtles and Mothers of Invention members Mark Volman (Flo) and Howard Kaylan (Eddie). Nearly two and a half hours of highlights from their expansive careers (well, at least up to the point of this release) are compiled on The History of Flo & Eddie & the Turtles (1983). Immediately establishing the pair's musical history together is their contribution to the Westchester High School's A Cappella Choir. In 1963 Volman was a first tenor and Kaylan a second tenor while under the direction of Robert Wood (after whom Flo & Eddie named their Mr. Woods Music publishing company) -- they are heard with the rest of the 1963 choir singing the school's "Alma Mater." With fellow classmates Al Nichol and Chuck Portz, the duo formed the Crossfires -- a local teen surf combo that racked up a few regional hits, including "Silver Bullet." Their sound evolved into folk-rock and they became known internationally as the Turtles. Rather than a cursory "best-of" from the band, there are fewer "hits" but more esoteric material presented -- namely, "I Get Out of Breath," which was meant to have been the Turtles' third 45, but was ultimately shelved. It joins "We Ain't Gonna Party No More" from the odds-and-sods Wooden Head (1970) . There are a few sonic time capsules by way of "The 'Real' Don Steel Battle of the Bands Album Commercial," a mid-'60s "Pepsi Cola Radio Commercial" sung by the Turtles, and a "'Turtle Soup Radio Commercial." After their criminally brief stint with Frank Zappa and the early-'70s Mothers of Invention, Flo & Eddie were signed to Reprise Records for a pair of long-players. From The Phlorescent Leech & Eddie (1972) are "The Flo & Eddie Theme," "Feel Older Now," "Nikki Hoi," and "I've Been Born Again." The follow-up, simply titled Flo & Eddie (1974), yielded "Best Part of Breaking Up," "Another Pop Star's Life," "Just Another Town," "Afterglow," and "You're a Lady," as well as the expansive reminiscence of "Marmendy Mill." Excerpts from a German radio interview are spread among the highlights from Flo & Eddie's pair of mid-'70s platters for Columbia. Illegal, Immoral and Fattening (1975) is represented by the title track, "Rebecca," and "Let Me Make Love to You," while Moving Targets (1976) was home for the cuts "Mama, Open Up," "Keep It Warm," and the tune "Moving Targets." The remainder of The History of Flo & Eddie & the Turtles features bits from The Flo & Eddie Show -- a syndicated radio program that grew from a fill-in gig they did at KROQ in Los Angeles before moving to KMET. These shows were guest-centric, and the luminaries who joined the dynamic duo on the air include Albert Brooks, Alice Cooper, Keith Moon, David Bowie, Marc Bolan, Mickey Finn, members of ELO, and Ringo Starr, all of whom are heard here. Enthusiasts may also want to add this anthology to their collections given the appearances of songs from the Murakami Wolf Productions adult animated film Dirty Duck. Among them are "This Could Be the Day," "(You're Nothing But A) Good Duck," and "Livin' in the Jungle."
