A William Melburne, a monk of Reading, was the twelfth abbat of Button upon Trent, over which monastery he prefided 16 years, and died on Thursday August 8, 1213. the i6th of king ohn: his seal is engraved in Shaw's History of Statsordlhirc. Among the learned men who belonged to the abbey of Reading, Hugh, the Sth abbat is much distinguished: but the earliest writer of whom there is any account was Robert of Reading, a monk, who travelled into Spain, for the sake of mathematical knowledge, and wrote about the year 1 143 '-I About the year 153o, john Holyman, afterwards bishop of Bristol, was a monk of Reading abbey; at which time Hugh the last abbat wrote to the University of Oxford an epistle, in which he says that " Holyman, whose life as well as his writings, proved him to be an eminent divine, lately preached at St. Paul's to a crowded audience, with such distinguished respect and admiration, that no sincere preacher of the gospel was ever received with great-er affection and applause by the inhabitants of that city." For these reasons, the abbat requests that the university-would be pleased to dispense with Holyman from preaching at Oxford for thx degree of doctor in divinity, and that he might preach at London, on pretence that the city was much polluted with Luthcr's doctrine-I-. John Holyman was born at Codyngton near Hadenham in Buckinghamshire, was educated at Vvinchester school, and elected fellow of New-college, in 15 x 2.
