Excerpt from The History and Antiquities of Boston, and the Villages of Skirbeck, Fishtoft, Freiston, Butterwick, Benington, Leverton, Leake, and Wrangle: Comprising the Hundred of Skirbeck, in the County of Lincoln; Including Also a History of the East, West, and Wildmore Fens, and Copious Notices of the Holland or Haut Huntre Fen; A History of the River Witham; Etc The greater part of modern prefaces contain much that is generally re dundant, and, always ought to be, unnecessary. For instance, an author states, in his preliminary address, the object and intention of his work; this the title-page should always sufficiently do. Then the preface often ename rates the contents of the volume; this ought to be rendered unnecessary by the running titles, the table of contents, and the index. Next frequently follows a long statement of the sources from which the author has collected his materials, and the authorities to which he refers in corroboration of his facts; this should always be done by notes accompanying each particular statement: where this is attended to, a detailed reference to authorities in a preface is useless, and therefore redundant.
