In these twenty years there was not so much original literature produced; most of the novelists and the transition poets had begun their work before 1750. But from 1750 to 1770 such significant crit ical works appeared as Lowth's Sacred Poetry of the Heb rews Thomas Warton's Observations on the Fairy Queen Joseph Warton's Essay on Pope (vol. I, The Rambler (1750 The Adventurer The Idler (1758 Hume's Standard of Taste Goldsmith's Present State of Polite Learning Young's Conjectures on Original Composition Hurd's Letters on Chivalry and Romance Macpherson's and Blair's Dissertations on Ossian (1762 Brown's History of the Rise and Progress of Poetry Percy's Essays in his Reliques Johnson's Preface to his Shakespeare Wood's Original Genius and Writings of Homer and the letters on literary subjects of Gray, Wal pole, Johnson, Shenstone and Percy.
