Cash signed to star in a Christmas special for American television which was to be shot in Switzerland; Cash invited three good friends and fellow country music legends to appear as his guests, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Willie Nelson. The four singers, all fabled for their wild ways and refusal to play by the rules of the music business, had a great time working together, and decided to record a collaborative album. Calling themselves The Highwaymen, these musical outlaws enjoyed impressive success with their first record and tour, and cut two more albums before health problems, scheduling difficulties and differences over the group's direction brought the collaboration to a close.
