A limited amount of archaeological work had been carried out in the Stann Creek region of Belize before the author's investigations. The survey and excavation reports presented in this volume stand as a complete work on the archaeology of the area to date. Almost wholly based on research carried out and processed in the 1970s, the book combines the analysis of archaeological data with an investigation of the relationship that is likely to have existed between the ancient Maya of the area and their immediate environment. The author begins by discussing the environment and land use in the Maya mountains and the coastal plains and cays, and then describes her survey and excavation of these regions. Then follows reports on the artefact finds, including ceramics, flaked stone and faunal remains, and summaries and conclusions drawn from this material.
