With regard to the New Testament, it may be sufficient to observe that, as has been pointed out below (p. The very different conditions under which the writings of the New Testament were produced, and especially the relatively short interval of time separating them from the period of our Lord's life upon earth, make it to our minds impossible that the application to it of the methods of the Higher Criticism (in the legitimate sense of the expression), though it may alter our view of the origin and strue ture of some of the documents concerned, should ever affect appreciably the historical evidence for all the leading facts of our Lord's life, or for the vital truths of Christianity.
