I've always enjoyed Peter Hedges' plain-spoken style, and 'The Heights' is no exception. The novel tells the story of two people, Tim and Kate, who have a good marriage. They live in Brooklyn Heights, have two kids, and seem to be set. However, Hedges has shone a light on the fact that Brooklyn Heights is a small town, despite its location in the shadow of Manhattan. This book essentially explores complacency and the dangers of succumbing to it. Is a rock solid life really rock solid if it hasn't been tested?
As usual, Hedges' writing is sharp and funny, despite his unadorned style. I especially liked Tim's anal, overachieving student, who gets a platform every few chapters and is utterly recognizable to anyone in education. (Or anyone who had a classmate like her).
While there is nothing earth-shattering here, this book is worthwhile for its examination of the mundane, everyday lives of unexceptional people who thought they were doing their best - until they were shown otherwise.
