This film is extremely affecting and beautifully directed, photographed and costumed. It takes place in London in the late 1930s and is the story of two sisters in love with the same man. Madeleine (Olivia Williams) is married to Paul (Paul Bettany) who is in love and carries on an affair with Dinah (Helena Bonham Carter). There is betrayal all round, - sister of sister, husband of wife, mother (Eleanor Bron) of daughter, all carried out in that elegant 1930s way when a glance or a loaded sentence will do. But the claws are there nonetheless.
It is almost like a ballet, with the four leads displaying such grace and perfection that it is a tour de force. The way the sound is accentuated at intense moments is impressive, as when a key is placed down upon a table to stress the importance of the action.
A pleasure on the eye and ear, with a plot that is meaningful and tight, the film cannot be faulted.
