A pretty good apocalypse horror, with spiders. As a tarantula collector/caretaker and arachnid enthusiast, I absolutely love this stuff when it's done well. Especially when this concept is done in a somewhat realistic way, without really fearmongering spiders too much. This was done perfectly in The Hatching. The entomologist is a huge example of what I'm talking about. Pretty much the only thing that I spotted that she had gotten wrong was saying "typically spiders in captivity form groups" or something like that. Their social behavior in nearly every species doesn't differ between wild and captive as far as the ones I'm familiar with. With most spiders, to keep them in groups means inevitably owning only one spider. Other than that, her dialogue concerning spiders was accurate and usually fun for me, understanding multiple taxonomic terms she had mentioned throughout.
I really liked the characters in general as they felt fairly well developed enough to care about. However, I felt just a bit disoriented by the amount of characters. The first quarter of the novel was a viewpoint switch to a new character seemingly every chapter. It wasn't horrible, but it felt a bit excessive at a couple points. Then we have the issue of the ending, it was weak as hell. The ending was mostly a lead-in to the second novel, and in my opinion, means the two novels probably would have been better as a single novel. None of this killed it for me though. Overall, you still get a good amount of suspenseful moments, waves of spiders munching on people, and the world going in the toilet in a well-described and panic-inducing way. I really liked it and I plan on reading the rest of the trilogy.
