This story starts out just like another of Carol Finch's stories : BOUNTY HUNTER'S BRIDE. An enormously wealthy woman is running away from an awful fiancee. This self-absorbed, greedy fiancee is being promoted by her stepfather. Highly resourceful, Natalie Blair makes her way to the end of the rail line and searches for the most dangerous man to protect her. Natalie knows she is only safe if she can convince the man to marry her immediately. She goes about it in the way she knows best -- she tries to buy a groom.
Natalie may have announced to the town that she is going to marry the legendary contract gunfighter Donovan Crow (1/2 Kiowa Indian), but that doesn't mean he will go along with her plan. So Natalie hires Crow to give her a legal marriage certificate and lessons in self-defense. Then she plans to strike out as an independent woman, chasing adventure across the western states.
Carol Finch writes wonderful dialogue and she is on top of her game in this story. There's lots of action; Crow has a string of disgruntled outlaws who want to eliminate him from the gene pool. Natalie is trying to stay out of the clutches of her stepfather, fiancee and their hired thugs.
I removed a star for some of the over-the-top action scenes; it was hard to imagine some of the things Crow and Natalie did alone to best the bad guys. Otherwise, a satisfying yarn.
