Excerpt from The Guilt of Slavery and the Crime of Slaveholding: Demonstrated From the Hebrew and Greek Scriptures The ground studies of the work, so far as the Old Testament is con cerned, were published in several successive numbers of the biblio theca sacra, in the years 1855 and 1856. Out of the intolerable pressure of the accusation that the Old Testament sanctioned slavery, the investigation was begun, and has been continued; the result is the demonstration in this volume, which, being drawn from God's word, we fear not to challenge the overthrow of it by the defenders of slavery as an impossibility. A. Similar survey of the teachings of the Bible on this subject had been admirably presented, in part, in a tract on the Mosaic system of servitude, by the late venerated and lamented Judge Jay, whose services to his country as a Christian jurist, statesman, phi lanthropist and patriot, the bitter enemies of his abolitionism have vainly attempted to depreciate or conceal.
