Abroad; before the 16th century not a needle was to be had but of foreign manufacture, and then a needle was looked upon as a domestic treasure. What sort of needles were used before the invention of steel ones? Those made of thorns or fish bones. Who invented Thimbles? The Dutch. They were first used in England about 1695. What do Houses consist of? Of walls, built chiefly of bricks or stone; and of floors, staircases, doors, and window-frames, of wood. What is the wood commonly used in building houses? Deal, which is sawed or cut from fir-trees, brought from Norway or Canada. What are bricks? They are made of clay, mixed with ashes, formed in wooden moulds, and dried by being placed in the open air. Are they then fit for building? No: they are piled up into square heaps, with cinders and straw between each brick, and burned till dry and hard. How long will they require burning? Two or three weeks, to do them thoroughly. What are these square heaps of bricks called 1 Clamps; but the best bricks are burned in kilns, by means of a hot furnace beneath them. What is Mortar? Mortar is the cement which binds the bricks or stones together; and is made by mixing lime, sand, hair, and water. How is the lime made? By burning limestone or chalk. What is used for covering the roof? Slates or tiles. Where do slates come from? Mostly from Wales. How are they obtained? They are dug out of the earth. What are the places called where they are dug?
