For the small but devoted international cult that worships the gravel-voiced reggae DJ Prince Far I, this compilation is occasion for both rejoicing and gnashing of teeth. Since the five albums represented here are all impossible to find in the U.S. (Voice of Thunder being the sole exception), getting several tracks from each of them on this program is bittersweet. It's relatively easy to take the glass-is-half-full attitude, though, with music this great. The program includes such well-established classics as "Heavy Manners" ("Discipline what the world needs today/And etiquette, you know?") and "I and I Are the Chosen One" as well as more obscure but equally worthy numbers like "Deck of Life" and the super-stentorian "Ten Commandments," on which Far I sternly intones the commandments with minimal elaboration over a spare, bracing one-drop beat courtesy of his studio band, the Arabs. There are also several instrumental dub tracks, but while these are very good, they're not driven by quite the same spirit that is presentn whenever Prince Far I opens his mouth and holds forth on matters both spiritual and political in that deep, dark pit of a voice. Generally speaking, though, this excellent overview should bring in a whole new generation of converts. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi
