This is a collection of some 25 conference-type papers under themes of great power, pacific and Australian perceptions. How useful the book is therefore turns on how many of the papers interests one. I found the balance acceptable and liked the bias in favour of power politics. Social factors get only a limited consideration. It is impossible to consider each paper separately but the book contains a wealth of information on the meeting of the British and German empires in the pacific.
