Not illustrated. 1903 Excerpt: ...as well as on the northern side in the little glen of Knockmaroon. 1 I am quite willing to admit that in many cases the lithological characters of beds have a remarkable constancy, so that conclusions based on those characters are sometimes found to be correct in opposition to evidence derived from what at first appeared to be the stratigraphical relation of beds. At the same time, lateral changes in the characters of beds are also common, beds on the same geological horizon often being exceedingly different at different places. The boundary line between the Lower and Upper Limestone in the Sheets 102 and 112 has been drawn chiefly fro-r the lithological character of the beds which seems in many cases t, o be in accordance with their apparent stratigraphical relation, and sometimes, as in this instance, to be opposed to it. The difficulties in determining the exact relations of the rocks in many localities, and in making those of different localities in the county Dublin agree with each other, are very great. There is, however, this economical and practical advantage in the boundary we have now drawn in the limestone, that all those areas which are spoken of as Lower Limestone, and which are coloured of a paler blue in the maps than the Upper Limestone, will be found to afford good limestone fit for burning into lime, while the darker coloured areas are chiefly occupied by earthy limestones and shales, to which the provincial term "Calp" may be applied J, B.J. A still larger exposure of beds, which are believed to belong to the Lower Limestone, is to be seen further west, but chiefly beyond the limits of our district; and again, to the N.N.E. of Castleknock, beds of pale gray limestone are to be seen S. of Elm Green, just W. of the Observatory, at ...
