In Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, President Lincoln was mighty pleased to have a general who wasn't afraid to fight and who actually WON battles. At the same time, Lincoln was torn because he constantly heard tales of Grant's drunkenness.
Loath to tie the can to his best fighting general, wise old Abe sent acclaimed newspaperman Charles Dana to Grant's camp with orders to report on what he found there. Dana correctly understood that he was to spy on Grant. The General wasn't stupid, however, and Dana had the good sense to confess his secret agenda. Thus Lincoln had a man in Grant's camp perpetually, and Grant had the president's ear. Dana had inside info on the war that he used to write smashing good news stories. Thus all three men were happy with their arrangement.
Time passed. The war was won. Lincoln got shot and Grant went on to win his own term in the White House. Dana, as the whole world knows, became rich and powerful as a newspaper publishing genius.
'The General and the Journalists' is a good story that needed telling, so somebody was bound to tell it. Maihafer's work is straightforward history: the facts are there; the sources are there; the story is there. Unfortunately, Maihafer's narration makes it ho-hum stuff. Read it in bed. You may find it beats counting sheep.
