Jesus is the perfume of a life whose meekness and humility have been caught from His own humbling of Himself for your sakes, and whose self-sacrificing love has been produced by the virtue of His own atoning death for you! The perfume you have got from Him is the best incense, the best offering you can give back to Him. It will be to Him a sweetsmelling savour. But not only will the sweet fragrance your life catches from the incense in the ivory palace of prayer, from communion with Jesus, the Rose of Sharon, be pleasant to yourselves and others; it will also exercise a preserving influence over you. It is well known that sweet-smelling flowers and aromatic trees and shrubs purify the air from fever and ague. In the neighbourhood of Rome it is deadly to breathe the infected air of the wide plains around the city. But by planting gum-trees in these desolate places, the aromatic breath of their leaves makes the air wholesome. And so, having your clothes, as it were, smelling sweet of the ivory palaces, you will be preserved from the moral evils of the world. You will not catch infection from the plagues and the fevers of the soul that hurt and destroy so many young people. You remember how Aaron took the censer, and by the cloud of incense that arose from it, put a fragrant barrier between the Israelites and the plague that had slain thousands of them because of their rebellion, so that the plague ceased, and they were safe. You remember how Balaam attempted to curse the Israelites; but, encamped as they were like trees of lign-aloes which the Lord had planted around the tabernacle, where the ceaseless sweet savour of the altar of incense protected them, no curse could prevail against them. And so you will be safe from every plague and every curse if you are...
