Seller's Description:
Fair. xxiv, [2], 364, [2] pages. Inscribed by Ms. Hanscom on half-title to 'my friend and pupil'. Signed by former owner [Mary Noel Arrowsmith] on fep. Cover has wear and soiling. Corners bumped. Edges worn through in places. Hinges show cracks and weakness. Pages have some edge discoloration. From the author's Preface: This collection represents the gleanings of several years. Not all desired letters were included due to barriers to securing copyright release. The letters are grouped in several topical areas, such as: News from Home, Students, Lovers and Friends, Gossip, Peer Judgment, and Makers of History. Included in the letters are those from several presidents, first ladies, and national political figures. From a posting on-line--Mary Noel Arrowsmith, Class of 1913, retired from a career in social work in the early 1950s to become the VP of advertising and sales for Production & Marketing Corp of Newtown, CT--the company that made Scrabble. A December 14, 1953 Life magazine article described the early public relations activities related to the game in this way: they "...managed to...sell their games to people with exceptionally active mouths, like the alumnae of Smith." Word of mouth in the Smith family means a lot! [Class of 1913 records, Alumnae Biographical Files. Elizabeth Deering Hanscom was born on August 15, 1865 in Saco, Maine. She graduated from Boston University in 1887 after which she obtained her Master's degree there. Hanscom received her Ph.D. from Yale University in 1894, the first year the University awarded Ph.D. s to women. That same year she joined the Smith College faculty, where she became a full professor and occupied the Mary Augusta Jordan chair in the English department until her retirement in 1932. She was a popular teacher and was noted for introducing the study of American literature at a time when the field was generally not taught at institutions of higher education in the country. She died on February 2, 1960 in Weymouth, Massachusetts. In all, 20 women enrolled as Yale graduate students in the fall of 1892. They endured "open hostility" on campus, the Boston Evening Transcript reported. But among those who stayed, many triumphed. The first seven women to earn PhDs at Yale-graduating in 1894, in a class of 21-went on to careers that included professorships at top women's colleges and scholarly contributions in the sciences, literary studies, and women's rights. Their education even before Yale had prepared them well; in some cases, Yale family connections mark them as a privileged class. Like many women of the time who entered professions, none of them married. The Yale archives have no images of any of them except Elizabeth Deering Hanscom-whose last name, coming first alphabetically among the seven women, made her the Graduate School's official first female graduate.
