Although this is a dated history (written in1935) and uses language from direct quotes that would be highly offensive today it covers territory that few authors have attempted such as the Barataria pirates like Jean Lafitte, wild riverboat men who could just as easily kill as steal, the Know Nothing Party's influence in the city, acute sanitation and health problems and, of course, party politics.
The title is misleading since it would have you believe this is about organized crime. This doesn't even begin to appear until near the end of the book.

Fun but sloppy
This is a book of anecdotes, many of them fascinating but with little or no substantiation offered. It is obviously not of interest to scholarly readers but also not to general readers who simply wonder whether to believe this or that colorful detail. Nor can one tell, absent references, where to go to learn more about a particular topic. Much of the book does not strictly concern the Vieux Carr?. The book might more accurately be called something like A Very Informal History of Bad Behavior in and around New Orleans.
