The French and Indian Wars is one of many volumes from the American Heritage Junior Library. This series is an introduction to key events and people in American history. This volume is a fast-moving narrative of the four conflicts fought over North America between Britain and France and their Indian allies; these four conflicts were known as King William's War, Queen Anne's War, King George's War, and the French and Indian War by the English colonists. The French and Indian attack on Schenectady in 1690, the Deerfield Massacre of 1704, the harrowing journey of captive Mary Ingles in 1755, and the British victory at Quebec in 1759 are among the many topics covered in this concise yet informative book. The book also provides brief profiles of George Washington, William Johnson (an English trader who won support of the Iroquois), Edward Braddock, Jeffrey Amherst, James Wolfe, Marquis de Montcalm, and Robert Rogers. The contrast of wilderness warfare with the traditional style of European warfare is a common theme in the book. Advantages of each side are also considered. Numerous prints, paintings, engravings, and maps of the period supplement the narrative. This highly readable book is ideal for middle and high school students and is an excellent overview of a significant event in both world and American history.
